Introduction
to Claire Mason
Art College seems a long time ago now, but this
opened my eyes to the world of the arts, sculpture,
the masters and history, providing a diverse appreciation,
and sensitivity, of creative possibilities. I went
on to do Carving and Gilding at the London College
of Furniture and was captivated by the fabulous features
and energy of wood. I studied Cabinet Making and after
a few years of world travel I settled in Ireland, and
was self employed as a Cabinet Maker designing and
making fine bespoke furniture in solid timber.
I’m a people person so I came out of the Workshop
and began working with the folks in The Central Remedial
Clinic, Dublin, and then Western Care Association,
in co Mayo, creating all sorts and enjoying the
process. I then went through a Ceramics phase, building
and throwing pots with the group from the Vocational
Training Centre in Castlebar.
I returned to the UK and happened upon a stone
carving festival and that was that. I was hooked. I
met some great carvers; Jim, Mike, Val and the wonderful
(late) Mary Spencer Watson, and they kindly gave me
tuition and encouragement to carve my Fathers Headstone
…a huge piece of rugged rock straight out of the quarry
with a sheered face. This is still my proudest work.
Since then (nine years ago) I have carved many pieces
and aware that I will spend my life refining and progressing.
I am soon to start carving alabaster and Carerra marble..
